May 22, 2012 – Houston – The overall winner in the Mid-West Steel Building Company 2011 Design Build competition is Bayou City Event Center, in Houston, Texas. The General Contractor was LoneStar Construction of Houston, the Erector and Roofing contractor was L&Y Construction and the Designer was Husmann and Associates Architects & Planners PC. The building is owned by SSS Land Development, Lori Schroeder.
Bayou City Event Center is a single slope building except for the foyer area, which is gabled. The roof is a 2:12 slope with a height of 23’-9″ on the low side and 43’-9″ on high side. It features a 24-gauge Ultra-Dek standing seam roof with Signature 300® color finish. The wall panels are 26-gauge reversed rolled PBU wall panels for stone/stucco exterior finishes.
The Center is close to 50,000 square feet and opened in April of 2011. It is located near Downtown Houston and the Texas Medical Center, and has the largest banquet capacity of any non-hotel venue in the city.
Darryl Schroeder of LoneStar Construction explained how the Center came about. “We owned the land and had planned to build something industrial. Then some people in the catering business approached us. Some larger private banquet facilities had closed, and they saw a need that could be filled.”
The Center’s focal point is a 21,750 square foot grand ballroom that can host up to 2,500 guests, or can be split into smaller function areas. It also features the Lakeview ballroom, a smaller, intimate room with large picture windows and a beautiful fireplace, which seats up to 100 banquet-style.
The interior of the Bayou City Event Center is a feast for the eyes, with meticulous attention to detail not often found in public venues. The ballroom ceilings featur extensive decorative ceiling ornamentation, with carved plaster crown moldings, corbels and high-end lighting fixtures, including large chandeliers. In the foyer, highly polished custom-designed tile flooring is set into an intricate pattern.
According to Schroeder, future plans include building a gazebo and fountain, creating an outdoor area behind the Lakeview ballroom to accommodate outdoor events.
