Special Olympics began in the early 1960s, when Eunice Kennedy Shriver saw that many children with special needs didn’t even have a place to play. She decided to take action and held a summer day camp for young people with intellectual disabilities in her own backyard. This vision eventually grew into the global Special Olympics movement.
In Texas, Special Olympics Texas (SOTX) is a privately funded non-profit organization working to enrich the lives of those with intellectual disabilities through the power of sports. SOTX provides opportunities for more than 44,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities throughout the Lone Star State to develop their potential, experience joy and friendship.
